Every ASICS running shoe, compared

We pulled independent lab measurements for the four ASICS running shoes we stock — real weights, real stack heights, real drops. One of them is not the shoe ASICS says it is.

The finding

ASICS advertise the Gel-Nimbus 28 with an 8mm heel-to-toe drop. Independent measurement puts it at 5.2mm — a 2.8mm gap. Drop changes how load moves between your calf and your knee, so if you chose the Nimbus specifically for a higher drop, you did not get what was on the box. The Kayano 33 measures 8.5mm and is the genuinely higher-drop shoe.

Which one should you buy?

What the numbers actually mean

Stack height is how much foam sits between your foot and the road. More is softer and more protective; less gives you better ground feel. Anything from 35–40mm counts as max-cushioned — three of these four sit there.

Drop is the height difference between heel and forefoot. Higher drop shifts load toward the knee and away from the Achilles; lower drop does the reverse. It is the spec most worth getting right if you have a history of calf or Achilles trouble.

Energy return is how much of the force you put in comes back. The Nimbus and Kayano both test low, which is the trade for their cushioning — they absorb impact rather than returning it. The Novablast returns noticeably more, which is why it is the only one here rated for tempo running.

Common questions

Which ASICS running shoe is best overall in 2026?

On independent lab testing the Novablast 6 scores highest of the ASICS range at 93/100, ranking in the top 2% of all running shoes tested. It is the lightest here at 249g while still carrying a 39.2mm heel stack, which is why it handles both easy miles and faster efforts.

Is the Gel-Nimbus really an 8mm drop shoe?

No. ASICS advertise 8mm, but independent measurement of the Nimbus 28 records 5.2mm — a 2.8mm difference. If you have chosen the Nimbus specifically for a higher drop, for example to reduce Achilles load, this matters. The Kayano 33 measures 8.5mm and is the genuinely higher-drop option.

Kayano or Nimbus — what is the actual difference?

The Kayano is the stability shoe and the Nimbus is the neutral max-cushion shoe. If your ankles roll inward when you run, the Kayano's wider heel base and FluidSupport frame are built for that. If they do not, the Nimbus gives you more cushioning for 20g less weight.

Are these shoes good for the Indian climate?

Mesh uppers on all four handle heat reasonably. Reviewers note the Kayano 33 runs warmer than the rest because its tongue has minimal perforation, which is worth knowing if you run through a Delhi summer.

What size should I order?

We list UK sizes, the same as Amazon India. All four run true to size. For ASICS men's, UK 9 equals US 10 — one full size below the US number.

Sources. Lab measurements — weight, stack height, drop, energy return — are from RunRepeat, who cut each shoe in half and measure to World Athletics rules. Wear-testing commentary is from Doctors of Running, a team of licensed physical therapists. Neither is affiliated with FlexX. Where their measurements disagree with the brand's published figures, we have said so — including on shoes we sell.
