Spikes or rubbers for Indian cricket? A straight guide by surface and playing role, covering turf, matting and hard wickets, with the ASICS models that suit each.

Buy spikes only if you bowl medium-fast or quick on grass. Buy rubbers for everything else. Most club cricketers in India play more on matting and hard wickets than on prepared turf, and spikes are actively worse on both.
Spikes have metal studs, usually in the forefoot, sometimes heel and forefoot. They bite into soft turf. That matters in exactly one moment: the delivery stride, where a fast bowler plants a braced front leg carrying several times bodyweight and needs it not to slide. Everything else about a spike is a compromise made to serve that moment.
Rubbers have a moulded rubber outsole with a traction pattern. They grip well on matting, hard wickets, indoor surfaces and dry grass, and they are far more comfortable to stand in for six hours.
| Surface | Buy | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Prepared turf, soft or damp | Spikes | Studs penetrate; rubber slides on wet grass |
| Matting over concrete | Rubbers | Studs cannot penetrate and skid. Uncomfortable and unsafe |
| Hard or bare wickets | Rubbers | Studs transmit impact straight into the heel |
| Indoor nets | Rubbers | Most venues ban spikes outright |
| Dry, firm outfield | Either | Rubbers if you are fielding all day |
In practice most Indian club and school cricket happens on matting or hard wickets. If that is your week, rubbers are not the budget option, they are the correct one.
Fast and medium-fast bowlers on turf: spikes, and treat them as consumable. The front-foot landing destroys the medial side.
Spinners: rubbers. You do not generate the braking forces that justify studs, and you spend more time fielding than bowling.
Batters: rubbers unless you are on soft turf regularly. Comfort across a long innings and quick turns between wickets matter more than stud grip.
Wicketkeepers: rubbers. You are in a squat for hours; spikes make that worse and offer nothing.
All-rounders: honestly, two pairs. It is the only role where one shoe genuinely compromises both jobs.

Shop all cricket shoesBuying spikes because they look serious. If you play on matting, spikes are less safe, less comfortable and wear out faster. Nobody watching can tell what is on your feet.
Wearing spikes on concrete or in the car park. Metal on hard ground blunts studs quickly and is genuinely slippery. Change at the ground.
Keeping them past the point of grip. A worn cricket shoe is an ankle injury waiting to happen. Replace when the tread flattens or the midfoot support goes soft, not when the upper looks tired.

No. Studs cannot penetrate matting over concrete, so they skid rather than grip, and they transmit impact straight into your heel. Rubbers are the correct choice for matting.
Usually not. Unless you bat regularly on soft turf, rubbers give better comfort across a long innings and are quicker for turning between wickets.
A season of regular play for spikes, longer for rubbers. Replace them when the outsole tread flattens or the midfoot support softens. Worn cricket shoes are a common cause of ankle injuries.
Both are rubber-soled. The GEL-PEAKE 3 is the competition shoe with a Trusstic midfoot and stronger lockdown for bowling and all-round play. The GEL-LETHAL FIELD 2 is the simpler, cheaper fielding option built for comfort across a full day.
